Most of the time Krav Maga is considered to be a form of martial arts. But Krav Maga is not at all similar to the MMA. Though it has different techniques from karate, Ju-Jitsu and boxing but the philosophy and execution are unlike MMA.
Krav Maga is not an Art
The major difference in MMA and Krav Maga is that MMA is an “art”. MMA is a competitive sport and it has rules and limitations. On the other hand, Krav Maga is a system of self-defense techniques that emphasizes on self-protection with no boundaries. There are no limitations of inflicting physical harm to the attacker in self-defense. MMA has strict rules not to injure the opponent and do not exercise aggressive moves.
But in Krav Maga the principles are totally opposite. Krav Maga is a survival system and in the process of surviving an attack any kind of violent and aggressive action is permissible. Even the main self-defense techniques of Krav Maga includes gouging the eyes, kicking in the groin with full power and targeting the softer face areas like punching the nose with full force to disable the opponent. Even some techniques like punching the heart, back of the head and side of the neck can prove fatal to assailant. In MMA these dangerous kinds of hits and strikes are not permissible at all.
Krav Maga is Not a Sport
Moreover, Krav Maga is not a sport. Other types of martial arts are dealt as a sport and different tournaments are held. Self- restraint, discipline and honour is taught in other martial arts. But Krav Maga practice is based on facing real life threats and dealing with them with full strength and end the fight as soon as possible.
MMA also have set boundaries are controlled so that no one gets hurt. But in Krav Maga is not played as a sport. There is no tournament held for Krav Maga practice as there are no restrictions for Krav Maga techniques. Krav Maga is a set of physical skills that is activated when the situation calls for self-defense. No limits are followed for saving oneself from the dangerous assailant.
Krav Maga Dwells on Improvisation
MMA tends to be staged and the skills are based on the set techniques. On the other hand, Krav Maga deals with real scenarios that cannot be anticipated in advance. The real-life attacks have thousands of variables and Krav Maga trainee has to improvise then and there and rapidly to avoid danger as soon as possible. Krav Maga instructors train the students to improvise and mold their certain techniques according to the threat faced. The readiness of mind and swiftness of reflexes is of the prime importance in Krav Maga training.
Therefore, it is clear that in practicing Krav Maga the basic aim is to ‘survive’. There is no shame in harming the attacker as long as the attack is not initiated by you. It does not matter what kind of counter attack technique you have followed, the thing that matter is that you have self-protected yourself. Unlike, other MMA you do not have to consider sportsmanship and honour. Survival is important whether you have achieved it gouging the eyes of the attacker or making him unconscious by kicking with full force in the groin.
